Why Is Naivasha Famous?

Naivasha is famous for Lake Naivasha, its large population of hippos, abundant birdlife and dramatic Great Rift Valley scenery. The destination is also known for Hell’s Gate National Park, Crescent Island Game Sanctuary, Mount Longonot, flower farming and geothermal energy.

Located approximately 90 kilometres northwest of Nairobi, Naivasha is one of Kenya’s most popular weekend getaways and an important stop on safari itineraries through the Great Rift Valley.

Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha is the area’s best-known attraction. It is one of the few freshwater lakes in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley and supports a rich variety of wildlife.

Visitors can take a boat ride across the lake to see hippos, African fish eagles, pelicans, cormorants and other waterbirds. The lake is surrounded by acacia woodland, farms, hotels, lodges and private wildlife sanctuaries.

Hippos and Birdlife

Naivasha is particularly famous for its hippos and birds. Hippos spend much of the day in the lake before coming onto land to feed after dark.

More than 400 bird species have been recorded around Lake Naivasha and the surrounding region. This makes the destination especially rewarding for birdwatchers and nature photographers.

Visitors should never approach hippos on land or walk close to the lakeshore without guidance, particularly during the early morning and evening.

Crescent Island Game Sanctuary

Crescent Island is known for guided walking safaris among giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, gazelles and other plains animals.

The sanctuary has no resident large predators, allowing visitors to experience wildlife on foot with a guide. It can be reached by boat from several points around Lake Naivasha or by road through the private sanctuary entrance.

Crescent Island is also a convenient stop for travellers breaking the journey between Amboseli and the Masai Mara.

Hell’s Gate National Park

Hell’s Gate National Park is famous for its towering cliffs, volcanic formations, geothermal activity and opportunities to explore outside a safari vehicle.

Visitors can cycle or walk through designated sections of the park while seeing zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, gazelles and several species of birds of prey. Major landmarks include Fischer’s Tower, Central Tower and the surrounding gorge scenery.

Access to the gorge may be restricted during heavy rain or when conditions are considered unsafe. Visitors should check the latest conditions at the park entrance.

Mount Longonot

Mount Longonot is a dormant volcano located near Naivasha. It is famous for its steep hiking trail, forested crater and wide views across the Great Rift Valley.

The climb to the crater rim is physically demanding, while completing the entire circuit around the rim requires additional time and fitness. It is a popular day trip from both Naivasha and Nairobi.

Olkaria Geothermal Energy

Naivasha is an important centre for geothermal power production. The Olkaria geothermal fields use underground steam from the volcanically active Rift Valley to generate electricity.

Visitors can also relax at the Olkaria Geothermal Spa, where naturally heated water is used in large outdoor pools.

Flower Farming

Naivasha is one of Kenya’s most important flower-growing regions. Large farms around the lake produce roses and other cut flowers for export to international markets.

The combination of fertile soils, sunshine, high altitude and access to water has helped make Naivasha a major centre for Kenya’s floriculture industry.

Weekend Getaways and Conferences

Naivasha is a favourite weekend destination because it is easily accessible from Nairobi. The area offers lakeside resorts, private villas, campsites, family hotels and conference facilities.

Popular activities include:

  • Lake Naivasha boat rides

  • Guided walks on Crescent Island

  • Cycling in Hell’s Gate National Park

  • Hiking Mount Longonot

  • Birdwatching

  • Fishing

  • Horse riding

  • Geothermal spa visits

Is Naivasha Worth Visiting?

Yes. Naivasha is worth visiting for its combination of wildlife, outdoor activities and comfortable lakeside accommodation. It is suitable for couples, families, groups, conference travellers and visitors combining the Great Rift Valley with a longer Kenya safari.
