Lake Naivasha to Masai Mara

Lake Naivasha to Masai Mara: Distance, Route & Travel Time

Travelling from Lake Naivasha to the Masai Mara is one of the most practical and popular routes on a Kenya safari. It connects the relaxed lakeside scenery of Naivasha with Kenya’s best-known wildlife destination without requiring you to return to Nairobi.

The distance from Lake Naivasha to the Masai Mara is approximately 210 to 230 kilometres, depending on the location of your hotel, your camp in the Mara and the gate used to enter the reserve. The journey normally takes around 4.5 to 6 hours by road.

Naivasha is also an excellent place to break a longer safari journey. It is particularly useful for travellers coming from Amboseli, Ol Pejeta, Mount Kenya or Nairobi before continuing to the Masai Mara.

The exact journey time depends on road conditions, weather, traffic, the location of your Naivasha hotel and whether your Mara camp is near Sekenani, Talek, Ololaimutia, Oloololo or within one of the surrounding conservancies. Published route estimates place the drive at roughly five hours, but it is sensible to allow additional time during a safari.

How Far Is Lake Naivasha from the Masai Mara?

Lake Naivasha is approximately 210 to 230 kilometres from the Masai Mara by road. However, the Masai Mara is a large destination rather than a single point.

A lodge near Sekenani Gate will have a different transfer time from a camp in the Mara Triangle, northern conservancies or another remote part of the ecosystem. Your itinerary should therefore be planned using the location of your actual camp rather than the reserve’s general map location.

We normally advise clients to allow most of the morning and early afternoon for the transfer.

How Long Does It Take to Drive from Naivasha to Masai Mara?

The journey from Naivasha to the Masai Mara usually takes approximately 4.5 to 6 hours.

Travel time can be affected by:

  • Your hotel’s location around Lake Naivasha

  • Roadworks or traffic near Mai Mahiu

  • Stops in Narok

  • Rain and road conditions

  • The Masai Mara entry gate being used

  • The location of your lodge or tented camp

  • Wildlife encountered after entering the reserve

The drive should not be treated as a short intercity transfer. It is a safari travel day, although you may still arrive in time for lunch or an afternoon game drive if you leave Naivasha early enough.

Best Road Route from Lake Naivasha to Masai Mara

The most common route is:

Lake Naivasha → Mai Mahiu → Narok → Masai Mara

From your Naivasha hotel, your driver will travel towards Mai Mahiu and then continue southwest to Narok. After Narok, the route taken will depend on your camp and the most suitable Masai Mara gate.

Naivasha to Narok

The Naivasha–Mai Mahiu–Narok section is mainly on established roads. This is generally the easier part of the journey, although traffic, roadworks and slow-moving vehicles can occasionally increase the travel time.

Narok to Masai Mara

Narok is the main service town before reaching the Masai Mara. It is a convenient place to:

  • Use the washrooms

  • Buy drinks or snacks

  • Refuel

  • Have an early lunch

  • Confirm final travel arrangements

Road conditions beyond Narok vary according to the route and destination. Some sections are surfaced, while others may be rough, dusty or muddy. Conditions can change significantly during the rainy seasons.

For this reason, we recommend travelling in a 4×4 safari Land Cruiser, especially when continuing into the reserve or one of the surrounding conservancies.

What Time Should You Leave Naivasha?

We normally recommend departing Lake Naivasha between 7:00 am and 8:30 am.

An early departure gives you enough time to travel comfortably, stop briefly in Narok and reach your Masai Mara camp for lunch or an afternoon game drive.

A typical travel day may look like this:

Sample Naivasha to Masai Mara Itinerary

7:00 am: Breakfast at your Naivasha hotel
7:30 am: Depart for the Masai Mara
10:30 am: Short stop in or near Narok
1:00–2:00 pm: Arrive at your Mara camp, depending on its location
Afternoon: Lunch, check-in and an evening game drive

These times are only estimates. We confirm the best departure time using the location of your accommodation and the current road conditions.

Can You Visit Lake Naivasha Before Driving to the Masai Mara?

Yes. If you only have one night in Naivasha, you can take an early morning boat ride before continuing to the Masai Mara.

However, you should keep the activity relatively short and aim to begin the road journey by about 9:00 am. Leaving much later may mean reaching your Mara camp in the late afternoon or evening.

If you want to combine a boat ride with a visit to Crescent Island Game Sanctuary, we recommend staying two nights in Naivasha or completing the activities on the previous day. This creates a more relaxed itinerary and protects your afternoon game-drive time in the Mara.

Why Stop in Naivasha Before the Masai Mara?

Lake Naivasha is much more than an overnight stop. It provides a natural pause between Kenya’s safari regions and helps travellers avoid unnecessarily long days on the road.

Avoiding Nairobi Traffic

Travellers arriving from Amboseli can bypass central Nairobi by using the southern and western road connections towards Naivasha. The exact route depends on traffic and current road conditions, but an overnight stay in Naivasha can reduce the pressure of driving directly from Amboseli to the Masai Mara in one day.

Breaking the Journey from Amboseli

Driving directly from Amboseli to the Masai Mara makes for a very long travel day. We normally recommend breaking the journey in Naivasha for one or two nights.

A well-paced itinerary could be:

Amboseli → Lake Naivasha → Masai Mara

This allows time for a boat ride, Crescent Island, Hell’s Gate National Park or a quiet afternoon at a lakeside hotel before continuing to the Mara.

Connecting Ol Pejeta with the Masai Mara

Naivasha is also a useful stop for clients travelling from Ol Pejeta Conservancy or the Mount Kenya region to the Masai Mara.

Instead of attempting the full journey in one day, travellers can spend a night in Naivasha and continue to the Mara the following morning.

A suitable route is:

Ol Pejeta or Nanyuki → Lake Naivasha → Masai Mara

Combining Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara

Naivasha can also be combined with a visit to Lake Nakuru National Park. Travellers may stay in Naivasha, take a full-day excursion to Lake Nakuru and then continue to the Masai Mara the next morning.

Can You Fly from Naivasha to Masai Mara?

Flying may be possible through scheduled safari flights or private charters, depending on the date, passenger numbers and seasonal timetable.

Safarilink lists Naivasha among its safari destinations and indicates connections between Naivasha and the Masai Mara. Flight schedules can change, so the exact service must be confirmed for your travel date. Safarilink Aviation

Possible arrangements include:

  • A scheduled flight from Loldia Airstrip to the Masai Mara

  • A flight operating through another safari destination

  • A private charter from a Naivasha-area airstrip

  • A road transfer to Wilson Airport followed by a scheduled Mara flight

A direct or connecting safari flight can reduce travel time, but the road journey is often easier to arrange and offers greater flexibility.

Your arrival airstrip in the Masai Mara must be selected according to your camp. Using the wrong airstrip can result in a long and unnecessary transfer across the reserve.

Road Safari or Fly-in Safari?

Travel by Road If You:

  • Want to see more of the Kenyan countryside

  • Are travelling as a family or private group

  • Prefer flexible departure times

  • Want to use the same safari vehicle for game drives

  • Have several destinations in one continuous itinerary

Travel by Air If You:

  • Want to reduce time on the road

  • Prefer a more comfortable transfer

  • Are staying at a camp close to a Mara airstrip

  • Have limited time in Kenya

  • Are comfortable with light-aircraft baggage restrictions

For most multi-destination safaris, travelling from Naivasha to the Masai Mara by private 4×4 offers the best balance of convenience, flexibility and cost.

Best Vehicle for the Journey

We recommend a 4×4 safari Land Cruiser with high ground clearance.

A proper safari vehicle is particularly important during the rainy months, when sections close to the reserve and conservancies may become muddy or slippery. It also allows you to begin game viewing after entering the Masai Mara rather than changing vehicles at the gate.

Our private road safaris include an experienced driver-guide who handles the complete transfer and subsequent game drives.

Is the Drive Suitable for Children?

Yes, families regularly travel from Lake Naivasha to the Masai Mara by road. However, the final sections can be bumpy, so it helps to plan short comfort stops.

For families with young children, we recommend:

  • Using a private safari vehicle

  • Leaving after an early breakfast

  • Carrying water and light snacks

  • Scheduling a washroom stop in Narok

  • Choosing a camp that does not require an excessively long drive from the gate

  • Avoiding too many activities before departure

A private vehicle allows your family to stop when necessary and travel at a comfortable pace.

What to See in Naivasha Before Continuing to the Mara

Depending on the time available, you can include:

  • A Lake Naivasha boat safari

  • Crescent Island Game Sanctuary

  • Hell’s Gate National Park

  • Elsamere Conservation Centre

  • Olkaria Geothermal Spa

  • Mount Longonot

  • Lake Oloiden

  • Lakeside birdwatching

  • A relaxed stay at a Naivasha resort

A one-night stay is sufficient for a short boat ride, while two nights are better if you want to explore Hell’s Gate, Crescent Island or several attractions.
